Best Live Music Venue – Small: Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar
Dan Electro’s is nothing new, but there’s something new about Dan Electro’s. The Heights area venue has a cap space of a few hundred and the folks that pack it on any given night are the best kinds of live music fans – curious, adventurous and eager listeners who know the bar has hosted music heavyweights like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons in the past, which stretches back to 1988, but is now championing the future of Houston music (and a healthy slate of visiting acts) with a promise to stage live music every night or damn near it.
When Splice Records head Shaun Brennan assumed command of the club early last year, changes to its interior design came, everything from upgrading the green room for acts to making the ample room in and outside the venue more user-friendly. But what’s new about the venue has less to do with cosmetic and equipment upgrades than attitude. Besides booking diverse acts (a Dan Electro’s staple since its inception), there’s a real feel that music matters most here, beyond being a for-profit establishment or a good hang or a bar with inexpensive, strong drinks and a large patio for communal gatherings. It’s music first at Dan Electro’s circa 2025 and that bolt of energy to Houston’s music scene is electrifying.
